Easy Home Remedy Treatment for Heartburn

When a person gets heartburn, they want immediate relief. For some, the pain of heartburn can bring tears to their eyes. There are some who find relief from heartburn by drinking milk, as it may ease mild heartburn. Drinking a small amount of nonfat or skim milk every couple of hours may push the acid back into the stomach.

Other home remedies include drinking green tea. The Chinese have been using green tea as a heartburn remedy for almost five thousand years. Another home remedy that has been around for hundreds of years is baking soda. Baking soda mixed with a glass of water will absorb the stomach acids that create heartburn. It is not the tastiest remedy but it has been effective for billions of heartburn sufferers. Experts advise that if a person has severe heartburn, they should avoid eating the foods that cause it. Severe heartburn can cause serious damage to your throat and over time surgery may be required to repair it.

Eating a banana after every meal may help to alleviate heartburn symptoms as the banana has a protective barrier to protect against the acid that causes heartburn. For those who suffer from heartburn often and do not want to take a lot of medication, home remedies may work for them.

Another home remedy for heartburn is to combine Take a mixture of two tsp of natural apple cider vinegar and two tsp raw honey in a glass of water before meals. Heart Rate Monitor Six Secrets Promoting Peak Performance

A heart rate monitor is an indispensable performance partner, and aerobic ally. The device puts an end to exercise guessing games, by zoning in on exercise intensity, tracking cardio capacity, and keeping tabs on the general efficiency of your efforts. The data generated by a heart rate monitor acts as a reliable compass to enable you to reach your fitness goals.

Heart Rate Monitor Secret One - Fitness Feedback

Establishing your cardiovascular fitness level, based on factors such as age, weight, activity, and heart rate, is sensible before you start an exercise program. A quality heart rate monitor should include this feature. An additional benefit is that it provides you with a fitness baseline, for gauging improvement over time. It will also give you an idea of how fit you are, compared to the other magnificently muscled specimens of your age out there...

Heart Rate Monitor Secret Two - Measuring Motivation

The digits on a heart rate monitor have an astounding ability to activate your motivation button! This is especially true if you train on your own. A well-chosen device will detail exactly what is expected of you, and what you have to do to get there. The data the monitor constantly spews out keeps you on track to reach your exercise goals. A positive progress report from the heart rate monitor pushes you to improve your performance during each workout.

Heart Rate Monitor Secret Three - Pinpoints Perfect Pace

Pace depends on a wide variety of physical and external factors, such as your route, the weather, a new routine, or a rocky personal patch. Every fitness buff knows how easily the body can manipulate you into believing that you are really stretching yourself, while your true performance may be discouragingly dismal... With the feedback offered by a heart rate monitor, subjective judgements are balanced by objective fact. Time and again, this innocent-looking little device will motivate you to wearily trudge back to your targeted range.

Heart Rate Mo! nitor Se cret Four - Exercise Efficiency

If you have just been converted to the fitness fraternity, you may still believe in the old adage of 'no pain, no gain'. Your aim should rather be a gentler, sustained effort at your targeted heart rate, for a period of about 30 minutes. This is where the value of your heart rate monitor lies. By enabling you to stay on target, at the most beneficial exertion rate, the results of your super-efficient workout efforts will be noticeable within a short period.

Heart Rate Monitor Secret Five - Calorie Crunching Companion

Weight management, or weight loss, often features in fitness planning. A heart rate monitor with the capacity to support you in your efforts, can guide you toward your goal weight, and helps to keep you there. Some ranges, such as Polar, even have dedicated weight management monitors.

Using a heart rate monitor as part of a weight loss program, can include keeping track of calorie intake, as well as monitoring any form of activity during the day. In addition, your target heart rate range can be calculated automatically, to enable you to lose weight, and to use your exercise time as efficiently as possible. Once you reach your goal weight, your heart rate monitor can be used to come up with a new, personalized program for weight maintenance.

Heart Rate Monitor Secret Six - Mentor Mentality

The beauty of a heart rate monitor is that it acts as a mentor, with your best interest at heart, so to speak. Once your target heart rate for a productive training session has been established, your practicing partner watches you like a hawk. If you are a bit slack, and don't maintain the perfect pace to remain on target, your heart rate monitor gives you a stern wake-up call!

If you are a procrastinator, make sure you get a heart rate monitor that doesn't give you the opportunity to postpone your workouts. There is magic in a monitor mentor that tells you exactly when to gear up, what to do, and then doesn't let you off the hook for! the dur ation of the session...

If you have any health concerns, it is a good idea to check in with a health practitioner before you start a training program. To help you to find a balance between injury causing over-training, and ineffective under-training, a heart rate monitor is a good investment.

Holistically Healing Heartburn

Millions of people suffer from the symptoms of heartburn every day. Those with acute cases of heartburn may have a condition called acid reflux or gerd (gastroesophageal reflux disease).

Any form of heartburn is an unpleasant experience, to say the least. The splashing up of stomach acid into the esophagus and throat can be quite painful and potentially dangerous. In extreme cases, where the esophagus is continually damaged by the reflux of stomach fluids, a condition called Barrett?s Esophagus can develop. This condition is a precursor to esophageal cancer.

Barrett?s Esophagus occurs when chronic acid reflux or esophagitis is not controlled. Through constant inflammation and damage, the normal cells that line the esophagus called squamous cells turn into specialized columnar cells. Columnar cells are not normally found in human beings and can become cancerous.

The physical cause of heartburn is the improper functioning of the LES (lower esophageal sphincter). This ringed muscle at the bottom of the esophagus, relaxes in order to allow food to enter the stomach. This muscle then retracts in order to keep the digestive fluids where they belong. It is when this muscle is too relaxed or damaged, that the stomach fluids can escape up into the esophagus thereby causing acid reflux.

There are many possible causes of acid reflux. The foods that we eat play an important role. Food that is too acidic can aggravate this ailment. Not chewing food properly, eating meals that are too large and lying down within three hours of eating can all contribute to acid reflux.

Certain foods and beverages can cause the LES to become lazy. These culprits include smoking, drinking alcohol and prescription drugs. Raw onions and garlic, fried foods, chocolate and foods that are too spicy can also cause the LES to relax.

There are two ways to treat this condition. They are the allopathic medical and the holistic approaches to disease. The allopathic medical way is to prescribe c! ertain d rugs such as H2 receptor antagonists, which include Tagamet and Zantac, or PPI drugs (proton pump inhibitors) like Nexium and Prilosec. These medicines slow down the production of stomach acid and are the two main types of pharmaceutical acid suppressors.

This pharmaceutical approach is dangerous in that it impedes the proper digestion and assimilation of food. There are also numerous harmful side effects associated with these drugs. Drugs only treat the symptoms of a disease or condition. They are not intended to cure. If the drug companies created drugs that cured they would soon go out of business.

The alternative way to treat acid reflux is holistically. Holistic by definition means considering a whole thing or being to be more than a collection of parts; Treating the whole person rather than just the Symptoms of a disease.

Using alternative remedies, which are natural and have no side effects, is certainly the safest and most effective approach. These treatments are also far less expensive than drugs. Holistic treatment, unlike drugs, can actually cure the condition or disease.

In order to develop acid reflux, we must first have an acidic system. By treating the whole body, acid reflux will disappear. What we eat and drink determines the PH of the body.

Vegetable juices, like raw potato, celery and cabbage are very alkaline in nature and are helpful in correcting an acidic stomach. Papaya juice contains the digestive enzyme papain, which has a soothing effect on the stomach and aids in the breaking down of protein.

Slippery Elm, bladderwrack and marshmallow, belong to a category of herbs called demulcents. These herbs aid digestion by decreasing inflammation and by soothing the affected areas. They form a protective barrier against stomach acid and other digestive irritants.

There are many holistic ways to cure acid reflux. Meditation can be of great help. Start by doing deep breathing exercises for ten minutes. Keeping the eyes closed, visuali! ze you s tomach, LES, esophagus and throat as young, pink, tender and perfect. Continue to breath and picture yourself in perfect glowing health. See yourself eating slowly in a relaxed atmosphere, enjoying your food. Picture the food being digested and assimilated in a perfect manner. Feel all the parts of your body working in perfect harmony together.

Yoga can also be very beneficial to the body as a whole. Loosing weight and regular exercise are important as well. Drinking copious amount of pure water not only flushes the system of toxins, but dilutes stomach acid during periods between meals.

The holistic approach to healing is the medicine of the future. We can all be a part of that future now.

Black Tea Actually Good For You

You may not realize it but tea is the most consumed beverage in the world except for water. Since it is such a popular drink, it is a good thing that it contains a lot of nourishing properties.

Virtually everybody has heard that old adage ?An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?. People should realize that the ounces of vitamins, food supplements, dietary products, and exercise equipment they buy as a preventative health measure doesn't offset the pounds of fast food, carbonated beverages, cigarettes, and alcohol they consume that are destroying their health. Many people don?t realize that one of the easiest, least expensive and effective measures to shift the winning balance to the side of prevention is right under their noses. If you drink tea you are already a winner but here are a few facts regarding black tea and its miraculous effects.

There are so many different teas on the market it might surprise you to find out that they all come from only one type of plant called camellia sinensis. The different teas get their unique color and flavor depending on the amount of processing the leaves go through.

Black tea, the most common type used in the United States, goes through the most amount of processing. The leaves are picked, cleaned, sorted and then allowed to oxidize giving it its rich dark color. Black tea contains: Favonoids (antioxidants) which improve artery function helping to prevent heart disease and strokes; Tannins which effects gastric and intestinal activity thus helping to control diarrhea (To help with diarrhea let the tea steep for a full 15 minutes); Theophylline, helping to improve cholesterol levels; Fluoride to help prevent tooth decay; Polyphenols, shown by research to increase the number of white blood cells.

Black tea also contains vitamins c, a, b, k and traces of minerals including potassium and calcium. Loose tea gives more benefits than tea bags since loose tea goes through less processing.

Black tea only contains about half ! as much caffeine as coffee and that level can be reduced by reducing the brewing time. The caffeine starts to release during brewing after about a minute. Small amounts of caffeine have beneficial effects such as increased energy, improved circulation, and help in the release of waste products. Studies show that after drinking the caffeine from tea that your energy rises slowly, plateaus and then gradually decreases.

As you can see black tea is beneficial, so drink up and enjoy without feeling guilty for not drinking herbal tea or green tea. Black tea may be enough to deliver that extra ounce of prevention leading to better health.

Some Food For Thought Is Your Diet Killing You!

I must admit that I don't usually write articles with such a chilling headline, so I feel that I should give a little background on a relatively innocent experience which prompted me to write this piece.

I would also say quite candidly that there is nothing really new in the main context of it, in fact most probably, everyone is concious of these facts in some way or another.

What I really do wonder though, is just exactly how many of us are actually making any real attempt to seriously look after ourselves, healthwise that is!

I live in Central Scotland in the UK, and according to statistics, we have one of the highest mortality rates from such things as coronary heart disease, strokes, obesity, etc, etc, and I often wonder why this should be the case!

Of course many things are contributory factors to this, and I am no medical expert, but there is one very important factor involved which I have studied extensively, and that is diet!

In Scotland we are renowned for our love of deep-fried foods such as fish and chips, pies, takeaway meals, our alcohol consumption, and so on. Every region of the Western world has its favourite goodies I suspect, so I am sure that you get the picture.

I must hand it to our Health Authorities however, because for some considerable time now there has been an extensive and on-going campaign of Health Education, including some excellent TV and Radio ads, outdoor billboards, and similar such things.

It was one of the latter that really caught my eye recently, so much so, that I can't quite get the image out of my mind. It is a large billboard, which contains a graphic picture of a human heart with two giant grey hands sueezing the life out of it!

Very very effective, (at least I thought so), my congratulations go to the person who devised it!

This was the spur that prompted this article, and as I said at the beginning, there is nothing really new in it, but I think it bears repeating nonetheless. Life is a precious gift, a! nd altho ugh we are not immortal, there are many many things that we can do to prolong it, and preserve our health.

As far as diet is concerned therefore, here are some of the important ones again:-

Cut down on the fat,and cut down on the carbs.

You've heard the popular advice on weight loss diets. Cut the fat! Cut the carbs! Cut the calories! Eat a balanced diet! But how can you cut though all of the confusion, and eat a diet that is balanced and healthy. Not always easy is it!

Here is some advice from nutritional science, which might help.

Cut out the junk fats.

Most people do not need an ultra low fat diet, but most of us could improve our diet by cutting out the junk fats. These are processed fats, hydrogenated fats, polyunsaturated oils that have been heated, and fats that are combined with junk carbohydrates.

Processed fats are those fats most likely to put on flab and clog your arteries. We do all know this don't we!

Cut out the junk carbohydrates

The majority of people do not need an ultra low carb diet, but unfortunately, many people who do go on a low fat diet continue to eat highly processed foods.

They switch from processed high-fat foods to processed low-fat foods, and then when the food manufacturers create low fat foods, they tend to replace the fat with junk carbs.

These can actually pile on the pounds, because basically junk carbs are low-fiber carbs, like sugar, fructose (and all the other *oses), flour, cornstarch, fruit juice, and such.

Yes, fruit juice is a junk carb too you know!

After all, how much fiber is there in fruit juice. Virtually none, simply because it's yet another junk carb. You would be better to eat the whole fruit instead, with its fiber intact.

Cut out the junk calories.

Most people do not need an ultra low calorie diet, but just think what your diet could be like if you dropped the processed fats and the low-fiber carbs. You would then be eating mainly natural proteins, with lots of veg! etables plus whole fruits, and the odds would be that you would be eating far fewer calories as well.

That's the kind of calorie cutting most of us should be doing!

Make every attempt to eat a balanced natural foods diet.

By natural foods, we mean those kinds of foods that would have been eaten by our hunter-gatherer ancestors. They would have had lots of whole vegetable foods giving them vitamins and fiber for instance, and also moderate to small portions of meats, fish, seafood, and other animal and protein foods.

These they would have grilled, stewed or baked, not deep fried! They would also have eaten small portions of fresh whole fruit in season, which is the diet on which the human race evolved!

So the next time you're about to order a meal with fries and a sugary soda, stop and think about how it could be improved. Replace the fries with a salad for example, and the soda with a mineral water say. It would probably surprise you, how much significant progress you have already made towards a healthier balanced meal.

Just simple sensible changes can work wonders!

When you are at home, look for recipes that use whole fresh foods, with a minimum of processing. Try and make sure that your meals include natural unprocessed foods, with lots of healthy vegetables, both cooked, and raw when in salads. Avoid processed fats and processed low-fiber foods.

Here is a little simple menu that I often use and enjoy.

Grilled fish with steamed green beans and peppers. Large mixed salad, dressed with small amounts of olive oil and, vinegar or lemon juice.

Then fresh fruit platter to finish off.

A healthy balanced diet can be that simple you know!

Life is there to be enjoyed, but moderation in all things is the watchword in my opinion. I do hope this article has given you some food for thought however!

Artery Disease The Killer Among Us

What do our arteries do?

The human body is an incredible machine and the thing that keeps it all going is the heart. This organ is our pump and the blood pumped around our body by this pump is carried around via arteries and veins. Therefore, it is imperative that any disease to these arteries is prevented or treated as a matter of urgency.

Diseases that can affect the arteries

Any form of arterial disease is dangerous due to the death of organs by oxygen starvation. This can happen when there is a blockage in the artery.

The most common artery disease in the Western world is hardening of the arteries. It is most commonly caused by age but can also be influenced by other factors as well, affecting the rate of progressive illness. Hardening of the arteries is called arteriosclerosis.

Another disease is atheroma which is a condition in which fatty deposits can be found on the walls of the arteries. This increases generally as the body ages.

Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a naturally occurring ingredient of the blood and, if it leaks into the inside of the artery, it forms a fatty streak that is the beginning of the atheromatous process. As this streak grows, its surface may break down, triggering a clotting mechanism that causes a mixture of fibrous tissue and fatty tissue to form in the arterial wall. This is called an atheromatous plaque. When this continues to grow, it begins to block the blood filled space of the artery.

Eventually, there are changes in the deep arterial wall where fibrous tissue forms on the wall side of the atheromatous plaque which then progresses to the stage where it is blocking the interior of the artery. Hence, a blockage of the artery occurs. Even when there is a partial blockage, the flow of blood past the obstruction is hindered and the resulting clot may cause a total blockage known as a thrombosis.

There is also the possibility of an embolism which occurs when parts of an atheromatous plaque dislodge and travel toward a s! maller a rtery which may then become blocked.

Atheroma is most likely to happen in parts of the arterial wall that are most prone to stress and movement such as sites where arteries branch off into smaller arteries. The lining at these sites is subject to greater stretching which allows more cholesterol to invade the wall.

What happens if the artery is blocked?

Every organ in the body is a likely area of arterial disease because oxygen is supplied to them via the arteries. If atheroma disrupts blood supply to any limb or organ, then it will certainly die. If this happens to tissue, it is known as infarction. If it happens to a limb, it is commonly known as gangrene.

For obvious reasons, the most severe problems from the effects of atheroma are those affecting the heart, the brain, the legs, and the aorta.

Heart attacks

Because the two coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart are under more stress than any other artery, this organ is particularly susceptible to atheroma or blockage of the arteries. When a coronary artery becomes blocked, it may be called a coronary thrombosis or a myocardial infarction. The myocardium is the heart muscle; thus, when it is deprived of blood, it dies and is called an infarction.

Another problem which affects the heart is when the atheroma is causing a partial blockage where there is only enough blood getting through to keep the heart supplied when it is at rest. When the body is active, it increases the need for blood in the heart and poor supply or no supply creates a starvation of oxygen. This creates pain in the heart and this pain is known as angina pectoris or just as angina. Often, the conditions known as angina and myocardial infarction are lumped together under the name of ischemic heart disease as they are both results of lack of oxygen. Ischemia means a lack of oxygen without total deprivation.

Strokes

In the brain, atherosclerosis can cause a stroke. Strokes may be minor or fatal and may happen because an arter! y has be come blocked as a result of atheroma or embolism. It can also occur as a result of an artery leaking blood into the brain because of a weakness in the wall.

If the legs are affected, they become very painful, particularly during exercise. If the atheroma in the legs is severe, it may result in gangrene which may then require amputation of the leg as a consequence.

Two things can happen if the atheroma affects the aorta. The wall of the aorta may balloon out because of the weakening in the wall. This creates a swelling known as an aneurysm. Although most aneurysms are found in the abdomen, they may also be found in the chest. The aneurysm may continue to expand and then leak with disastrous results. The only treatment in this incidence is surgery.

Risk factors

The two most well established risk factors for atheroma are high blood pressure and diabetes. There are also some genetic factors which appear to put people at higher risk. Cholesterol levels, if not kept low, may also put you at a higher risk.

Prevention of artery disease

There are some things that a person can do to prevent the development of atheromatous conditions such as getting effective treatment for high blood pressure and diabetes. A doctor may also prescribe medication to lower cholesterol levels.

The other important thing to do to prevent or postpone atheroma is to stop smoking, or never start smoking, as nicotine can counteract the positive effects of other measures. As well as reducing the chance of heart disease, general health will improve.

Menopause and Heart Palpitations

Menopause isn?t typically a life threatening condition ? but in extreme cases, it can bring upon symptoms like rapid heart beat that feel like it is. The occasional feeling that your heart ?skips a beat? does not necessarily indicate a serious medical problem. For those with menopause, rapid heart beat should be monitored by your doctor to check for a mitral valve prolapse which is a mild deformity of a heart valve.

Palpitation is when the heart races repeatedly without any sign of stopping. It?s not only extremely uncomfortable, it?s downright frightening. Premature contractions cause the heart to beat twice really quickly, causing more blood to enter the heart on the third beat. This increased amount of blood makes the heart contract even more. In essence, it is a forceful pulsation that can sometimes be caused by stress.

Stress can come from menopausal symptoms like irregular periods, annoying ringing of the ears (tinnitus), insomnia, panic attacks, depression, and everyday occurrences like the simple yelling and shouting of a child at the playground.

When you perceive a stressor, hormones form your brain pass into the bloodstream alerting the adrenal glands. In response they secrete corticosteroid hormone including cortisol.

When cortisol raises sometimes twenty fold, the body speeds up its blood sugar burning capacity providing an instant surge of energy. Cortisol causes your heart to beat faster in order to pump oxygen-bearing blood more quickly into your tissues. Too much of cortisol can lead to diabetes or high blood pressure, so this is a process of you can to be conscious of and learn to cope with by practicing such relaxing techniques as yoga, meditation and Pilates.

The addition of caffeine loaded drinks can worsen this condition as can smoking. In order to avoid rapid heart beat and palpitations, it is best to refrain from stress and maintain a healthy diet. Alcohol and coffee are known to excite the heart?s processes, causing it to work much harder th! an it ha s to.
